28 May 2010 - 19:57Manic May

May has been an extremely busy month. I feel like I have barely had time for myself. So here is a quick run down, before May is over…

-Finished coaching 4th/5th track at work
-Volunteered at the Eugene Marathon
-Had a garage sale
-Had two weekends filled with friends, BBQs and kickball games
-Work meetings almost every day
-Got cleared from the orthopedist to resume all physical activity

Probably the highlight of the month is that I am now officially a volunteer with the Santa Clara Fire District. I spend every Thursday night with other medical and fire personnel learning about how to keep everyone safe and healthy. Next month, I will be attending an EMS assistant classes to learn how to assist medical personnel while in the field. Once that is completed, I will be starting to head out on calls in the evenings. The plan for next year is to start my EMT classes. Words can’t describe how excited I am to start this new endeavor!

6 May 2010 - 23:02Erin to the Rescue

Well…not yet, but maybe soon. I have taken on a new endeavor in my life…I am a volunteer with the Santa Clara Fire District.

Many people don’t know that I have always had an interest in the medical field, but never had the time, money or patience to do medical school…and I don’t want to. A few weeks ago, some volunteer EMTs came to teach a standard CPR class at work. One of my co-workers was one of the instructors and we got to talking about how to become involved in volunteering with a fire district. I live in the Santa Clara area which has a great volunteer district. So I went to meet the chief and before I knew it, I was already attending weekly meetings.

So far I have been to two meetings (called drills) and I have loved every minute of it. Currently, I am just learning more about the district and how things work. The people are awesome, very laid back but serious about helping others. Pretty soon I will be taking classes to be an EMT assistant, then eventually, I have the option to become an EMT. I can’t remember when I was so excited to participate in something. Every Thursday night that I come home from drill, I am completely energized and excited for what the next meeting brings.

3 May 2010 - 6:36Half Marathon (take two)

In the past three weeks, I have seen two great marathons: Boston and Eugene. This past weekend I was a course marshal for the Eugene marathon. It was a lot of fun. I was stationed at mile 22 (of 26.2) along the Willamette River and cheered on the runners and walkers. The first two hours I was there I watched all the hard core runners speed by, and even saw a childhood friend. But after that came a serious of slow joggers and walkers of various ages and sizes. It got me really motivated to attempt the half marathon again, since it didn’t work out so well last time due to my soccer injury.

On September 5th, there is an inaugural Eugene Women’s Half Marathon. While I could train to run it, I decided that I will walk this half marathon and get some of my good friends join me. My goal is to get a big group of us to all walk together, and enjoy the ‘girl time’ together. And who knows, maybe it will inspire me to run the half next May!
