30 March 2010 - 21:19Spring Break…Woo!

Spring break came and went…before I even knew it. It was a simple relaxing vacation. Adam had to work the first part of my spring break so I mainly laid low. I scheduled various appointments because they are too hard to do during the work weeks. My mom came down for a day and we spent a day just hanging out. It was just what I needed! We also dog sat for a few days so we managed to head out to the dog park quite a bit, which Ginger loved.

The last half of spring break was spent in Black Butte Ranch. The house recently went through an amazing remodel so we got to relax in style. We did our fair share of doing nothing and vacationing. We headed into Bend on two different days. We enjoyed good beer and food at both Bend Brewery and Deschutes Brewery. I was very disappointed to hear that Deschutes is not producing Cinder Cone Red anymore, which is my favorite red beer…jerks! When not visiting Bend, we spent time playing games, watching movies, playing video games….and of course napping. It was a simple, but perfect spring break.

Now I have three weeks of work, then we head to Boston! I can’t wait!

22 March 2010 - 7:22The Divine Cupcake

On Saturday night we tried a new dessert place in Eugene called The Divine Cupcake. They specialize in cupcakes….duh, but they also have coffee and a great tea collection. Adam had a peanut butter and jelly cupcake (peanut butter cake, with raspberry filling and peanut buttercream frosting) and I had a ‘Warm Fuzzy’ (chai latte cake with vanilla/cinnamon buttercream frosting). We weren’t overly impressed with our cupcakes, but if you are looking to try a new dessert place in Eugene, stop on by!

22 March 2010 - 7:12The Next Stage

This weekend I had two experiences that gave me a look at one of the next stages in my life…the having children stage. Don’t worry…I’m not having on planning kids anytime soon. I love kids, but right now my students, Ginger and Adam are all the children I need right now.

On Friday night, I went out to dinner with friends. There were eight of us; two were pregnant, two just had babies in the past few months, two already had kids, and then there was myself and another woman. And there was a baby there too! It was a really fun time, but it was different being with all mothers and mothers-to-be. A lot of the conversation focused around kids, babies and families, which was different but nice. I got in my baby time and even entertained him while I ate.

On Saturday, I went with my friend and former roommate Heidi to the soon to be completed Nurse Midwifery Birth Center here in Eugene. Heidi is half way through her pregnancy (due beginning of August) and has been working with a midwife since the beginning of her pregnancy. Assuming all goes well, she plans to deliver at the center. While the center is not fully completed yet, we got an idea of what the center will look like. It was so beautiful inside, it felt more like a house than a doctor’s office. The birthing rooms are large and have bamboo flooring, big windows, soothing paint colors, large bathroom and large jetted bath tubs for the mother’s comfort and for water births. It was amazing how ‘homey’ it felt. This nice thing is that it is located less than a half mile away from a hospital in case anything were to go wrong with a pregnancy (which had only happened twice in the twenty years the center has been opened).

Having children is still a few years away for me, but it was good for me to get an idea of the different choices I will have when that time comes. Previously, I wanted to have a baby in a hospital with drugs, but now I am leaning towards more of a natural birth with a midwife. I am still not too keen on water births, so I am not sure how I feel about that. While I will do more research when the time comes, it’s nice to be able to have options. So while I am years away from a baby, I know that I will be thrilled to bring a new life into this world.

7 March 2010 - 23:00Deanna’s First Show

Deanna (aka Adam’s mom) had her first solo art show this past weekend! On Friday, we gathered at Bush Barn Art Center in Salem to celebrate Deanna’s art work displayed in the focus gallery. Over 92 people came to the show, including my mom, aunt and grandmother. It was a great event followed a nice dinner party at her friend’s house. It was the perfect evening to honor Deanna’s artistic creations.

3 March 2010 - 11:45Das Boot

Well the cast if off…and I will spare you the details of the amount of dead skin on the bottom of my foot and length of my leg hairs that were lurking underneath my cast. But needless to say it was pretty gross. The doctor took a new set x-rays which revealed everything was healing how it should. The fracture has still not fully healed, but it is well on its way!

For the month of March, I am in the giant black boot I have come to know so well over the past few years. The boot will only be used doing the day to keep my foot supported. Three times a day I need to do exercises to increase movement, strength and range of movement of my ankle. When April hits, I am back in real shoes….my left shoes have been missing me. My plan for the month of April is just to get back into exercise by walking and biking, and then in May I will start to get back into running. In May I go back for my final x-rays to ensure the healing is complete. So June is when I am planning to return to soccer, but I will take it easy if I need to. I don’t want to rush back into soccer and risk re-injury.

Surprisingly, there is not as much loss of muscle and there doesn’t seem be that much difference.

1 March 2010 - 7:33Where did February go?

Umm…how is it March already. February was by far the busiest month for me. But life is good here. I get my cast off on Wednesday which is probably the highlight of year so far. And spring break is in three weeks, can’t wait for a break…er…the vacation kind, not the broken bone kind :)
